It's done!!

Why I got a bug to finish the sweater when it is humid and in the upper 80s I will never know, but here she is.

I knit this with Peruvian Sierra Aran (80% highland wool, 20% alpaca) in Garnet I think, color #788. I did not want a totally solid yarn; this has a subtle heather to it. Once I washed the sweater, it softened up considerably. I will still have to wear long sleeves underneath, but that is what I had planned.

I am going to Maine next weekend so I just might be able to wear this before next winter. Coastal Maine is still pretty chilly this time of year.

I followed the pattern for the 33 ½” bust. The sleeves are perfect for my long arms, and it fits nicely on my narrow shoulders. The front is a little shorter than I thought but it will drop with wear so I am not sweating it.

This was a fun project and I will consider making another jacket, probably in a lighter color like something in the oatmeal family, and a yarn that I can wear in more than one season.

My first two halves are complete. I am making the 37" size. I decreased the length of the sleeves by 1.5". You can read more about the progress on my blog.

Now I am working on to the back pannel, but I think I may have to make it shorter so it will fit. Yikes!

It's sad really. I joined this blog when it first started and I'm only now almost done. At one point I dropped the Sunrise, because I didn't have any more yarn; however, sunny days are approaching again, I recently purchased more yarn and now I can finally finish the back of my jacket. Yippeee! I just need to make sure I have batteries to share with everyone.

I have picked up my SCJ again. I completed the first sleeve and front last weekend, but then realized that it was HUGE. I blame Weight Watchers. I was a size 39" bust, but am now a 37. The sweater was going to hang down below my behind. So, I did the only thing I could do.......

..........rip back to the sleeve and continue in the next size down (37"). I also have decreased the length of the sleeve by 1.5". Thanks to Knitting Help, I was able to figure out he difference between k2tog and k2tog tbl.

Finished last week, but as it was faaaar tooo big for me , I tried a very tricky thing... wash it 40°C in a washing machine...
and ... It WORKED !!
It is the perfect size forme now... :)

I have finally finished my Sunrise Circle Jacket! Check it out:

This beauty took me ages... but my destashing resolution spurred me on to finish it. Overall I found it a very enjoyable pattern to knit and the finished result fits very well. I'm also well impressed with myself because I saved about 3 hours of my life by machine stitching the seams!

I finished seaming, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I used a whipstitch.

Now I am wondering what to use to hem. Any suggestions?

Finished the knitting on Sunday, sewed it up on Monday then had to shorten the sleeves on Tuesday (by about 4 inches/10cm).

I found it extremely difficult to get the right tension/gauge for this - I think the only way I would have got the right row tension would have been to use a lighter-weight yarn as well as smaller needles. I am very pleased with the result and have already worn the jacket several times. It has come out a bit bigger and longer than I anticipated from the photos but it is a lovely snuggly garment.
The yarn used is Colinette's "Skye" in copperbeach colourway and I used just over 8 hanks, using Denise interchangeables 4mm/US 6.

After a hiatus of several months, work has restarted on my SCJ. The two fronts/sleeves are complete, buttons have been bought and the back is on the home straight. I hope to have a completed jacket by the end of the week, with pictures.
I have found it really interesting to see how this one pattern can look so different and this KAL has been quite an inspiration for me - thank you so much Jackie for hosting it.

Buttons, Progress & More

I just received my new Patternworks catalogue today. I noticed that they now carry a nice selection of buttons in many styles. I am considering the Vue style buttons.

As far as sweater progress goes, I have two sleeves, but that is all. I am waiting to visit my local knitting guru, Patty Kim, who has drop in hours at Unraveled, to make sure my sleeves are not too long.

I am also considering joining the National Sweater Knitting Month KAL. Maybe I will be more inclined to finish this project.

I picked up my jacket again a few weeks ago after not touching it all summer. I am half-way done with the back (the fronts were done earlier this year) so I am thinking about buttons. I was perusing the site and noticed some people have done a one-button version that I really like. My question is does is work? Does it stay closed? Any other issues you want to share?

Finally, finally I have managed to get a photo wearing the lovely Sunrise. I finished it a number of weeks ago and to my shame I have taken 'till now to blog about it. I have been wearing it a lot, it's very cosy and it gets many, many compliments. I had a fun time knitting this and would definately recommend it to others. I had concerns about sleeve length but I decided not to modify the pattern and rectify it later if I needed to, but it wasn't necessary. I am pretty happy with how the sleeve length worked out.

The best part about making this jacket was discovering just how cool knitting bloggers can be. After knitting the back I decided I'd needed to go up a size to make the jacket fit me. Only problem was that I needed an extra two balls of yarn - and I had bought in from an online store in Australia. Bit of a problem! Enter Donni who just so happened to have 2 spare balls of yarn in the same lot number that I needed. Thanks Donni - your yarn went to a good home!

All y'all are finished/finishing up - I'm just getting started! It's inspiring to see all these sweaters though.

I am using a heavier yarn than many, I think - Beaverslide's fisherman's weight (4 st/in) n Dusty Clover. It is a very pretty yarn - but this is probably a little tight/stiff for the yarn. Anyone else knit with a heavier yarn?

I did get gauge , so proceeded up the left sleeve, knitting the sleeve hem in as I went (thanks for the tips!), and am thinking of shortening the sleeve by about 2" - I am short. It is slightly scary that this decision has to be made so early, but I take comfort in the fact that I can always cut an kitchener a panel in if I need to - ack. Anyone else shorten the sleeves while knitting?

Wahoo! One panel done! Weirdly, the second is almost done too. I had almost finished the left, when, in order to have something to knit without counting, I started the right panel. But the right panel got done first, and now I have to go back to the one that was almost finished way back in the winter. Hee hee.

As the moderator, I've felt a little guilty being so behind! Finally, the weight is coming off my shoulders :).

Here's my Sunrise Circle Jacket, in Queensland Collection Kathmandu Aran. While I really like the "Ivy" color (in better detail below), seeing the others you all have knitted in bright and rich tones makes me wish that I'd chosen something more colorful myself ... but I'm still very happy with mine. Haven't seen any buttons which struck my fancy yet, so, I've made some flat, oblong ovals with shanks out of clay, which my daughter's generous art teacher agreed to fire for me, and if she has the right glaze, I might use them. Until then (or until something else catches my eye), it will remain buttonless.

It is quite close-fitting, even after I blocked it out a bit, but I didn't knit this to wear over winter woolies anyway. I learned a lot in the process, and want to thank all the posters on this KAL for all the guidance and advice I've read here. This is my first knitted garment, and now that it's successfully finished, I am quite anxious to start the next one! (In a brilliant garnet, of course.)

My sunrise circle jacket! I used Cleckheaton country silk, found at a yarn store that was going out of business. I really love the way this Austrailian yarn feels. The sleeves are a bit long--I sure wish I'd been reading this blog earlier---but overall, I'm really happy with this sweater. I love the buttons and can't wait to wear it.

After 3 weeks ago sewing the Sunrise Circle Jacket together I have finally put the buttons on. I wore it today to SNB and got so many great comments, everyone loved it, as I do. It was an easy knit, although I must admit that during the Sunrise Circle Jacket Knitalong and reading so many comments about the sleeves being way to long, I was a bit scared about sewing it up and trying it on, but there was no need to worry, as the size 37in that I knitted, fitted me perfectly, sleeves and all. I knitted it with Jo Sharp Silkroad DK Tweed 8 ply in colour Emerald, it is a beautiful yarn to knit with.

The second picture is a more accurate color representation, but I love how you can see the pattern that the tweed is making in the first picture. I love working on this intelligent pattern and seeing how the shape changes from as you work from the sleeve into the body. The yarn is making a nice stiff, stretchy fabric that is interesting to work with. I am also updating my progress at my blog.

The sunrise is knitted, but now I need to block and finish it. Like many others I'm still not sure what to do about the closures and I may even end up lining it. Does anyone have experience in lining knit garments? I've lined sewn jackets, skirts etc. but am not sure whether it is such a good idea with a knit. Anyway...blocking is tomorrow.

So, my jacket has been knitted, seamed, blocked and all for a good three weeks now. And yet, it is not technically a FO? Why, you ask? Well, let's just say that safety pins really aren't a suitable closure. I did find some buttons that I loved, but they were $6/ea and I didn't love them that much. So I got some black toggle type things instead but...I don't know. They're really...rectangular. And I don't know if I like that! So the hunt continues. And when you live in a town of 5000 people, there aren't really too many places to hunt. I don't suppose wal mart would have anything, would they?

I went camping in Sequoia National Park last week and have progress. I am concerned about sleeve length though. I am knitting up the large (41") since I have a 39" bust. I measured about 17.5" from wrist to armpit but think the shoulder portion of the sleeve will add way to much length. Should I shorten the sleeve and continue with the shoulder portion?

Hello, I'm Bettina and I live in Spain. I hope you all had a lovely weekend.

My yarn for the sunrise circle jacket arrived a couple of weeks ago and I started right away. I'm using Alpaca Sport, 100% Alpaca, color 2030. I ordered it from Wollkontor in Berlin.

I have finished the back, left front and have now started on the right front and with the raglan decreases on the right sleeve.

The picture is a progress shot from the back, so far there are no other shots. Unfortunately, the colour does not come out very well.

Once the pieces are blocked, I'm planning on making a pattern of them and then I'll line the jacket. That should give the hem around the front something to hang on to. Unfortunately, while the Alpaca gets gauge perfectly, both stitch and row, it is very light and not dense enough to please me. Therefore the lining.

In regards to the buttons, I am hoping a local glassblower will custom make me five toggles (four plus one spare) to match the colour. I'll have to talk to him and take him a swatch.

Hi, I've been working on the jacket on and off this summer. I am using a discontinued yarn from Patternworks........its a microfiber,wool, cashmere blend and I can't remember the name right this sec. Anyway, I got stitch gauge but not row gauge so I'm adjusting as I go. I'm glad to read the tips on sizing, but I read the part about doing the front first too late! I have been looking for the right yarn for awhile now, so I was excited to score an amazing deal on this Debbie Bliss Aran (about 60% off the regular price) on ebay. It is a discontinued color, but one that I absolutely love. It has just arrived and has been sitting out in my living room so I can admire it.

I'm not quite as brave as Donni, I didn't take to the jacket with hot water and agitation to shrink it, but I did take to the sleeves with the scissors. Once I'd unpicked the seam I picked up all the stitches with a circular needle before I snipped. Doing both sleeves only took me an evening and wasn't nearly as bad as I'd anticipated. My sleeves look a bit wider than most people's as I put some extra width in my sleeves to begin with (I don't like my sleeves so close fitting) and compensated with extra raglan decreases. I ended up going with these turquoisey toggle-shaped buttons. I'm not 100% sold on the colour, but I can always change them later if I find something nicer.

In hindsight, I would have knit the next size down (but continuing with the extra sleeve width) as the jacket leaves plenty of (almost too much) room for layering underneath. However I've been getting a fair bit of wear from it since I finished it a couple of weeks ago so it won't end up as a knitted white elephant.

I believe I am the most unphotogenic person in the world. I literally freeze when I see a camera, and while I look utterly disgusted in the bottom pic, I am actually very happy with how the sunrise finally turned out, after much prodding.

Anyway, I used Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran Tweed, in Highland. This is the size 37, with many blocking modifications, and I sewed up the front. I think it may need a little more tweaking - maybe I'll resew the front again.

I used just under 8 balls, which was way under the yarn spec. It's a beautiful yarn, my favourite ever. And thanks to my delightful BF, I now have a closeup of the yarn to show you - not as bright as in daylight, but you can now see some of the flecky tweedy loveliness of it!

I finished this jacket nearly two weeks ago, and was keen to wear it for my birthday. It was finished in time, but the fit was disappointingly off. I knitted the 37", when I have a 38" bust, and once I'd blocked the pieces (which didn't need much coaxing in the end), and sewed it all up, it was TINY! I mean, the pieces blocked to the measurements exactly, and I'd stretched the fronts a little wider, so I expected this to fit well. But it looked like a kiddie jumper (sweater) and I could not get the toggles in any position where there wasn't serious gaping involved. Not good. I figured the jacket must have been designed for a miniscule person with a 37" bust. I'm about a size 12 Australian (8 or 10 US?), by no means large, but it was shockingly tiny on me.

So, what to do? I'd already blocked the pieces and the finished object, but no improvement. I then thought if I dunked it in water fully (the first time I'd only sprayed it) and stretched the $%^#&@ out of it by blocking it again, it might improve further. I was not confident, but guess what, now it fits (yippeeeee!), and it seems to be about a whole size bigger! I stretched the bust another 2 inches across, and the arms another inch too (they were so tight before)...

And to fix the gapey toggle issue? I sewed up the entire front of the jacket along the curve, left the loops on, and re-sewed the toggles into place. Voila - a fake fronted cardigan, but at least there's no gaping now!

So - if anyone is having similar problems, don't cry and burn your sunrise (as I nearly did), just block and sew! It CAN work!

It's off the needles, not sewn up yet, but it is finished. I had a flexi day off work on friday and cut finger and all, I knitted away most of the day, I had to be careful to tuck my finger away from the knitting, if I put pressure on the cut it would have bled all over my knitting, bandaids didn't help as they only got caught in the wool.

We went away for the weekend, but no knitting got done, Sunday night when we got home, I sat down for a bit, OK, to really late (but before midnight) and knitted until I finished. I was planning to sew it up last night, but after a day at work on the computer, my eyes are never the best so I thought it best to leave probably until the weekend when all rested up and eyes can see clearer. Photos to be posted at a later date, maybe when all sewn up.

So, I have finished and seamed the left front and the back. I cast on the right side today. So far, I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out. The seaming went pretty smoothly - I put the stitches I want to seam together on two sides of a circular needle and that seems to help my little pea brain a lot. I'm not sure which closures I want - I was thinking of knitting some frog closures (from Epstein's knitted embellishments), but I kind of like the contrast you get from using the toggles. I really liked the silver clasps that someone else used, but they might be too fancy for me. What has everyone else decided to do? Are you sticking w/ the toggles?

Summer Clickety-Click from the Moderator

It's exciting to have so much activity on the site in the middle of summer, when its so hot that knitting seems to entirely slip my mind. I just invitied about 20 new participants to the blog, who've all waited so patiently for the last month or so for me to get around to adding them. So first of all, sorry for the long wait, my summer brain has turned to oatmeal, and second of all, thanks for joining!

Ah, I'm so glad to have this finished (well almost finished. It's currently done up with safety pins until I find some buttons!)

I sorted out the raglan seam issues that I had previously posted about, and it seemed to work out ok. I did a one stitch seam allowance, and just tightened things up a bit. All in all the jacket's a bit big, but I'm pretty happy with the result - it's my first knitted item bigger than a pair of mittens!

Last night I started to sew up my Jacket and tackled matress stitch . What a thrill though to use Soft Tweed for this pattern....seams disappeared and the whole garment let itself be sewn up bar one side and all around the hems...tonights project.

I have one problem though.

As mentioned here - the Sleeves are WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY too long on me.

I know the style is long but we are talking maybe 20cms too long. I knew that at the time of knitting it but sticking to the pattern for once and not buggaring it up by changing it was my plan.

I have sewn the sleeves up but what should I do?

Snip off the extra length and fasten up the live stitches? The beauty of this pattern is that you hem all edges in a fair way so whatever I do will be hidden. Any tips/hints/secrets for this kind of stuff?

Kate Gilbert showed her "Petite" friend wearing it....note very long sleeves too - so I am not far off the exact pattern - but for practicality reasons (and also a quirky habit of mine is to always pull my sleeves up or wear 3/4 length sleeves)....just too long for me.

help with raglan seams

Well, technically I finished my jacket this morning (woo hoo!) but I'm not happy with the raglan sleeve seams at the back (the ones at the front are another story!). This is my first attempt at raglan sleeves, so I don't really know what I'm doing. How have people done their seams?

On one side I've left one visible row of decreases, making a very obvious seam (see pic).

This seems to look ok when flat (if you ignore the pre-blocking lumpy bits), but looks a bit messy when stretched (ie when being worn). I ripped out the other seam, and re-did it with all decrease rows hidden, but I don't think that looks any better. I'm wondering if the seams supposed to be done with both edge rows visible? I really can't tell from the photo how it's been done there. I'm desperate to get this damn jacket finished, so all suggestions will be very very much appreciated! It seems like I've been working on this forever, so I'm keen to get it all done and dusted.

I finished the left sleeve and front of the Sunrise Circle Jacket the other night, I have now cast on for the right sleeve and front and am up to the second increase. I hope to have this finished by the end of July it is a really nice and easy knit. I may not get it put together as the next few weeks are busy for me.

I have cast on for the Sunrise Circle Jacket in Jo Sharp wool, and even though I have only done a few rows it is lovely and soft to knit. I don't have a timetable as to when I will complete it, but I hope to be able to work on it over the next few weeks and get a lot done, hopefully to get some wear before winter is over (plenty of time then). I am probably the last person to cast this on in the KAL for this jacket, but I will try not to be long in finishing it.

M1R - painfully difficult!

I'm finally onto the right front, the bit with the 'circle' increases, and I'm finding the M1R increase really really hard. Sure, I did a few of these early on, but it seems nearly impossible to get my needle into the stitch - does anyone have any tips? At the moment I envisage moments of extreme rage (!) and RSI as there are many, many M1R increases in this section.

Any help much appreciated... :)

Here's a cool Co-incidence.

A couple of months ago Clair from Xotik Yarns asked me if I have any Red Karabella Soft Tweed for an overseas over she was processing. I had one ball and sent it off. Sadly, I might add, as I had thought about making my Sunrise Circle Jacket in the Red. Seeing as it was gone I got her to send me the blue colour that you see my Jacket now becoming. End of that part of the story. Nothing Special about that

Far far away a blogger called Sharon who lives in Ireland started her Sunrise Jacket when she got Clair's yarn....but came up short a few balls. She started to search for the same yarn - same dye-lot - no joy. Her project stalled.

When fishing through my stash last month I found 2 lonely balls of yarn. Red Soft Tweed to be exact. They have been sitting on my desk as I kept day-dreaming about what scarf to make out of them.

Forward a few weeks. I posted here about my Jacket and my thoughts on it. A few bloggers offered words of encouragement about how theirs had looked strange too but to keep going with it. Still nothing too special.

I love finding out where bloggers are from so when Sharon from Ireland left me a comment I had a wander around her blog. Always wanted to get to Ireland myself and love Irish Music so had a really nice day-dream reading her blog - and read all about weaving mills and lovely villages and right down the very very very bottom of her blog there was a post about her knitting up a Jacket but running out of yarn and waiting to hear from the person she bought the yarn from to see if she could find any other balls to finish the project. She didn't mention the type of yarn in that particular post but she showed a photo of it - and I recognised it as Soft Tweed.

Cue drumroll and Lightbulb moment!

I emailed her to ask if she had bought the yarn from Clair and you have probably worked out the answer as yes.....and I have the 2 balls she needs in the same dyelot sitting her on my desk. Tomorrow they wing their way to Ireland. How cool is that! Can you beat that for blogger co-incidences around the world? Here it is Sharon! Proof! :)

As I am using Karabella Soft Tweed my gauge and rows are spot on (PHEW!). At least I don't have to worry about that side of things.

But - as you can see I am measuring at 33'ish Cm's ( I am making the 41"/104cm size)...and I am on row 77. Schematics say that at the the 2nd part of the sleeve should total 33.5 cms but I have another 3 rows (not counting purl rows) left to do before I get to 2 stitches.....but boy howdy it is so long....

I am thinking about just knitting 2 tog to move on - I think that should work - it seems so long up my neck. I read Paisley's comments she received so I guess I could do the same thing at the end if it is too long. Spooky!

Apart from that I am still really enjoying the knit - just a little nervous that the whole thing is going to SWIM on me.

I had hoped that I would be able to show you a completed jacket this week. But the sleeves are too long. With my hands by my side, the cuffs are about level with my middle fingertips. Ideally, they would be level with my wrists. Maybe I do have short-a*%e arms in comparison to the general populace as the sleeve is at least 15cm (6") too long.
Anyway, the upshot is not as bad as MintyFresh's having to knit the whole thing again. I am going to attempt the frogging back from the cast-on edge of the cuffs. I haven't done that before so wish me luck.

size issues?

Hi everyone. I am at the point on my Sunrise where I am up to the WS knit row before I start the hem for the left front. Problem is, the front of the jacket looks too small (too narrow). Yes, I swatched before starting and tried many needle sizes to get it right (and my gauge was perfect!), but as I've knit this (back piece included) I seem to end up with a row gauge that's different. Meaning, the back piece, while OK in width, is a bit short in length (about 2 inches, total). I'm OK with the shorter length, but problem is that as I've been knitting in a radius (some rows 'sideways') it seems that this problem with row gauge has affected the width of the front. Just wondering if anyone has any clever ideas for how to make it wider across the front without mucking up the whole thing. I guess I could continue on with the pattern for the next size up and knit another 10 or so rows, but I'm concerned that then the length of the front pieces will then be longer than the back piece. I know I could get a little bit of extra width by blocking, maybe that's a better solution?

Not a terribly exciting post but I thought I should flash the start of my sunrise - I am lucky enough to sell Karabella Soft Tweed so of course I am using it - in the lovely Blue tone. The photo washed out the blue but it is so nice.

I started with the back a while ago and I kind of lost my groove with it all (too many other WIP's), then when talking with some friends at Stitch n Bitch on the Weekend they mentioned that it had been advised to start with the fronts....so I came home - put the back on stitch holders and worked on the sleeve. I am almost ready to start the section after the sleeve. Yahoo.

Back - darts are complete, just commenced the raglan decreases.

I thought I was going to cut it pretty fine with the amount of yarn I had left, so today I went and bought another ball of yarn. Would you believe, 5 or 6 weeks later and at a different store to last time, I managed to match the dye lot. I'm guessing that it must have been a very big batch but I'm still pretty impressed nonetheless.

I'm a little concerned about the length of the sleeves. Holding them up against my arms, I'm guessing that I'll have to try and frog back some of the cuffs. It may also end up being quite high-necked. Time will tell.

On a positive note, I really love that s2kp2 double decrease technique. I can think of a couple of other patterns on which it would be worth trying this one out.

I started over after making one and discovering I'd misjudged my mom's size (it was a gift for her). Here's the redo (a bit small on me):

I'm really happy with it. I made a handful of modifications in order to "improve" on the last one as best I could, including attempting more professional-looking decreases and finessing the shaping at the back. None of my modifications were necessary, but it was fun to think of ways to make an already great sweater into what I wanted it to be. Read all about the changes on my blog.

This pattern is so delightfully easy and fast, I still enjoyed knitting it a second time. Of course, I was planning on making myself one, too—that's going to have to wait a few months! I figure I might as well wait until early fall to do the third one, especially because I can't bear the thought of doing 3 in 4 months :) Good luck with all of yours as you progress!

Hey everyone! I just started last week, so there's really nothing to show yet. Will you believe that I've been knitting for three years but just now learned the long-tail cast-on? I'm a novice, I know. This is only my second adult sweater project, too. The first was an utter disaster, I don't like to talk about it. :)

I'm using my favorite yarn, Cascade 220, in a light green so I'll probably look more like a frog than a sun when it's all done. I appreciate reading about your experiences and I hope to have pictures to share later this week!

When last we caught up with our interpid knitter, she was encircling her Sunrise with a large green frog, about to do battle. We're happy to report that Mr. Frog did not need to nibble more than a little of the upper back to make it fit properly.

However, the services of the elegant Mr. Frog somehow were needed at the sleeve cuffs, to the tune of three inches plus the hem. I haven't the foggiest idea why that happened, other than maybe I have really, really short arms.

But anyhoo, it's done! Details on the blog if ya need 'em. And thanks everyone, I really enjoyed knitting along with everyone, and I'm very tempted to knit this again in a solid color, maybe even add some fair isle or texture along the jacket fronts.

I started my SCJ on Wednesday last week and by Sunday I had done all this

But it has all had to be frogged. My tension (gauge) was so far out that the top of the sleeve was above my ear!
I have gone down to a 4mm (US 6) needle and the tension seem to be fine now, as long as I remember to knit more tightly than usual.
I am now up to raglan shaping again - just as well there's no deadline for this.

Hello All—

Back when I made my first Sunrise, I noticed that the k2togtbls weren't nearly so neat and clean as the k2togs on the opposite side. Since they form the border between the arm and the half-circle on one of the fronts, this discrepancy was really noticeable.

Now that I'm redoing it (it was a gift; turned out to be too small), I've decided to work on all the little things that could have been done better the first time around, and cleaning up these stitches is a high priority.

So, in case anyone else is interested, here's the results of my research.

What you see here is a small swatch with left-leaning decreases on the left and k2togs on the right. (I increased two stitches on each row so I wouldn't come to the end and have no stitches left!) Ah, those lovely, neat k2togs!

I tried 4 different left-leaning stitches. They're the stitches that are slightly 'bigger' than the others along the left side of the column, and they appear every other row—if you click on the photo you can see the Notes I made on the photo in Flickr. Starting from the bottom, we have

* A standard k2togtbl. I was trying to keep the stitches only on the tips of the needles, but I'm not sure how successful I was. This stitch looks big to me, and it's exactly how all the stitches on my completed Sunrise look.
* An ssk. For this one, I slipped just the first stitch knitwise, then k2togtbl.
* A true ssk. Here I slipped both stitches knitwise and then k2togtbl.
* An off-standard k2togtbl in which I worked the purl row before differently: I wrapped the yarn backward on the two stitches that would be knit together, so that when I came to knit them they were already turned and the tension was taut. I got this tip from the Knitty boards.

I didn't try an ssk in which I slip the first stitch purlwise and the second knitwise; I should have tried that, I'm sorry.

But for me the choice is clear: Since I can predict where the k2togtbls will go on the next row, I can easily wrap the yarn in the opposite manner for the purls on the row before. I could still use to finesse my purl tension vs. my knit tension for those stitches, but all in all this creates a nice, smooth, tight little decrease that I'm pleased with.

I hope this is helpful to others who are starting and might want to play around with this decrease a bit.

The pattern was really self explanatory and I think it came out really well. If I made it again I would make a size bigger, so it's longer, but shorten the sleeves. The yarn was perfect gauge but seemed to have really bulky joins in almost every ball. It seemed like they'd glued two strands together to join the yarn. When knitted the join wouldn't bend and created a small hole in the garment. I recommend cutting these joins out when you come to them, then rejoin the yarn by "spit felting". I used that method when changing balls, so I had no ends to weave in. How great is that! More pics on my blog.

Very nice fit, I love the length that my worked out to...it is a bit longer than the pattern shows but for me that works out great [I prefer my stuff long or else I am always pulling things down, I hate an exposed back]

I ended up using buttons instead of toggles. I received several sets of WONDERFUL vintage buttons from my bestest friend that she found at a yard sale. One of the set was 4 [perfect #] wooden button in the shape of leaves. As my jacket color is Deep Forest they are PERFECT!!

Hey Newbies, Start with the Fronts!

She said to start with the fronts, and knit the back last so that you could adjust the back to fit the length of the sides. Many people have found that their gauge is off, and have had to adjust the back to match it.

I finally remembered my name and password for the Blogger account, so now I can post an update on this site. It was so easy, too!

Anyway, I've finished the left piece and about three-quarters of the back (although this picture shows less). It is an extremely easy pattern to follow and goes somewhat quickly. I can't wait until I'm done! I like the way the darts on the back look. They come in and shape it nicely.

After so many false starts (how many times did I rip out? Three?), I'm really cruising on it now. I'm almost done with the left sleeve and have already started the right (the sleeve part is uncomplicated and thus good for group knitting). It's very exciting, although I'm really itching to have this done so I can catch one more cool day to wear it on!

Hi everyone,

I just joined a few days ago, and just began my Sunrise yesterday. I'm up to the point where the darts begin. I'm using Red Heart Multicolor in Painted Desert. I'd like to use a better quality yarn, but this was all I already had, and I'm trying to finish up a few projects before buying new stuff. Plus, the colorway is very beautiful, and I figured I can't be a yarn snob, since I own store bought sweaters made from acrylic! I'll soften it up with some fabric softener when it's completed. Anyway, the colors are pooling and I think it is looking really neat.

The colors aren't really this bright. They are a lot "duskier", but I couldn't get a better representation of the color with my camera.

Why does time slow down as I reach the end of a project? Why, despite knitting on this jacket for two hours yesterday while I waited for the allergist, is this jacket not yet done? It's coming along so fast, and so slow at the same time.

Anyhoo, in case any of you were waiting for me to finish this project, here's a progress report.

Front and sleeve #1: Done, quite some time ago. Front and sleeve #2: Done, a while ago, except for the hemming and blocking, mostly because now I'm waffling on whether to hem first or seam first. The evidence:

The back: Within 15 rows of starting the neck hem.

The buttons: Bought and waiting patiently.

ETA: Later. Much later. Don't wait up. These time warp issues never get resolved easily.

ok, i know i did my showing off the finished item post, but since i left it on a lingering 'when's the train to paris?' note i thought i'd better finish this off...

it was the most i'm-obviously-wearing-my-sunrise-in-paris location : ) good hey? i wore it lots and it was perfect, so good i am seriously thinking knitting several more of these lovely lovely jackets. i love it that much : )

i was a bit sulky though, we visited LOTS of people in paris and not one said 'ooooooo, nice jacket, did you knit that yourself?' something i was slightly annoyed about until boyfriend made it better by saying 'yes, but it looks shop bought, so why would they comment?' so the right thing to say : )

So. I was almost done with my jacket.

But it is currently spending some time in the Naughty Chair. With a needle stuck in it.

It's pouting, can you tell?

I love Kate's pattern, but the finishing process has been a challenge for me. I happened to choose a lumpy bumpy yarn that is uncooperative, and that makes seaming evenly a bit of a challenge. You know how red yarns just refuse to be photographed correctly? Well, this yarn refuses to be seamed OR measured correctly.

When I was seaming up the LAST few inches of the second side--and victory was so close I could taste it-- I happened to lay out the whole sweater on the floor, and something looked just a little bit...wonky. So I measured, and I pinned, and I measured again (coming up with completely different results than the first time); and I cursed, and I finally realized that I had totally messed up one of the seams. Not the seam that I had worked on carelessly, confidently, in poor lighting, in front of the TV, while it lay in my lap; but the seam that I had done methodically, slowly, in good light, spread out on the kitchen table. Figures.

One side was clearly longer than the other, from armpit to waist.

I spent a few minutes thinking about ways to lower one of my armpits.

And then--R-r-r-ipppp.

It was a long seam.

The new seam is about halfway done. But I thought I'd leave it a bit while I worked on something else.

That'll teach it.

I was the second person to finish the jacket, but I'm back to square 1: I gave it to my mom this weekend, as her early Mother's Day gift, and it's too small! I overestimated how much smaller than me my mom is. I'm going to take it all out this week and start over. Here's how it fit her yesterday:

I am going to make it one size up (shown is the 33.5" size) and will not place the buttons until she's got it on--what was I thinking, putting them so far over?? As it is, we could probably fix it by placing just two buttons on the left front, but the arms were a bit snugger than she'd prefer.

Hopefully I'll finish it soon! She showed me her copy of Interweave--she'd folded down the corner on the Sunrise Circle Jacket Pattern, which means I made a good decision in making this for her!

My Sunrise is on the Move

The left front of my Sunrise Circle Jacket is completed. I love the look of this jacket. The increases look a bit "bubbly" on the WS on the fabric, but I am sure that this will block out. I originally was thinking I would dye the garment once it is finished, but now the colour of the jacket is growing on me.

I also love that I now have one final piece to knit and the jacket is done. It is still up in the air whether I will go with the toggle buttons or some kind of pin closure. I was at Michaels yesterday and didn't see anything I like. Guess that means I will have to take a trip to the LYS. DARN!

Progress note: first front finished

I've finished the left sleeve and front and all is looking good. The wool/silk blend has knitted up beautifully. The last 10 rows or so when you've got to count 41 or 44 sts between increases are a killer - either that or a useful meditation tool. Count the stitches instead of the breaths.

It's lovely seeing everyone else's finished jackets appearing on this blog. It inspires me to get a wriggle on with the right side so that I'll be able to wear it this winter. (We're heading into the cool weather here in Oz).

DONE...now for the buttons

Another Sunrise finished EXCEPT the buttons. I have buttons picked out and enough yarn left over for the loops [probably just barely] all I need is TIME.

I love the way the jacket turned out. I used Peruvian Collection Sierra Aran, row gauge was a bit off [24 rows instead of 28]and it made a lighter jacket. That will probably be just fine as I am in So. Cal. and it never really gets cold. Turns out that there is enough body to hold the curve shape.

I do have one problem....the sleeves are about 2" too long. I am reviewing my options, I'm thinking about if it is possible to un-knit from the cast-on edge up to the correct length. Maybe, but I have further complicated matters by doing a beautiful job on knitting the hem in. Anyone have any good suggestions?????

i love deadlines. it makes me work like a machine, and when i achieve them they make me glow. and right now i'm glowing like... a sunrise. look!

terrible photos: the colours are actually so much better, the finishing is good and the hems WORKED! i'm so happy : ) but also so sleepy... i'll write a better post in a few days and share a few details which might help people on hemming etc. in the mean time, good luck to those nearly finished!

Progress? No, not really

Congratulations to all the finishers, the different colours and yarns really look great. I'm progressing very slowly but in an attempt to shame myself into knitting quicker here's the progress to date. I started with the back.

And then I stopped. It looked a little too small for me so I decided to start working on a sleeve and front in the next size up and here's the progress.

So, I think I'll be frogging that back ( and I even did a tension square before I started!). I'm knitting it in the Karabella Soft Tweed colour 1110 - which is a gorgeous red shade. Can't wait to be able to wear it, with the weather in Ireland rarely very warm it should make a great year round jacket.

I'm starting on the back darts. When I perform the s2kp2, the marked stitch is not the K1 or 'center' stitch of the decrease, but is the second slipped stitch of the 's2'. Is this right? Do you then remove the marker and put it on the center stitch?

I got all the hems finished on Thurs. night and then didn't feel ready to block it [I am still intimidated by blocking]. I let it go until Sunday afternoon...then figured gahh just do it you probably can't mess it up too much So there they are.

Drying on the spare bed, cause that is the only place large enough in our house. Good thing we don't have any company expected.
The knitted up objects look a little see thru so I am hoping that they have enough body to hold the shape well. Hopefully they will be dry in a day or two then it will be time to seam and see.

guess what? i just have the right hand side to hem and then it's done! in the end i followed Kate's pattern (since it's been so amazing in every other way) and seamed and then hemmed. it's worked like a dream and i'm thrilled with the results. now i'm thinking about how best to block. i've knitted it in debbie bliss aran tweed and don't really want to completely soak it... i was thinking about using my spray gun and spraying it all? what techniques have other happy finishers used?

I'm done! I finished my jacket on thursday night. I love it. It's the most beautiful thing i've ever knitted!!! I just wish it was still a little cold so I could wear it out! Here is a picture:

Yes, I am shouting. I am just so excited!!!

I ended up using a "dark" silver button rather than toggles.

The fit is perfect. Nice and snug and warm. Which is perfect since we are starting to have cooler weather here in Australia. I am so pleased with my jacket....and yes, I am still considering knitting another (my sister requested one ;))

Spent all day at a conference yesterday that turned out to be quite interesting -- a rare feat for one of these events. (It was the Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship conference in Syracuse, NY.) Usually I doodle, fidget, space out and look around the room, losing concentration after so many speakers. But this time, knitting in hand, my attention barely wavered. Inspiring listening and I got through the entire first skein of the Sunrise -- I'm halfway up the sleeve!

Yarn Sale

Just wanted to share that Webs is having a big yarn sale. As in Sunrise Circle Jacket yarn. They have Cascade 220 and Jo Sharp Silk Road Aran Tweed as well as some other tweeds. Happy shopping!

Of course I see this sale *after* I bought my Cascade 220. And thank you all for your feedback, I will make the 35" size. Droopy fabric, boo! Slightly under gauge, so making slightly bigger sweater. Hooray!

I actually finished the knitting last night - but it was late and I was tired - so I decided to wait until today, after it was blocked, to photograph.

I can see it taking shape now - Love it!

Still on the hunt for the right buttons. The ones I bought would have been great for the original colour yarn I had chosen - but I think they are too dark for this colour (I guess I should have placed them in this photograph...oh well ;))

I cast off the last stitch last night - hooray for me!!! Now I have hemming [couldn't figure out how the knit hem the curve], blocking and seaming. I expect that to all take me as long as knitting did. I am a NOVICE at blocking. I am not sure I understand the whole process...but I have read and read and hope to proceed with caution.

I am a bit concerned because I used Peruvian Collection Sierra Aran and I read about Al's problems with the yarn not having enough body. I keep looking at my pieces and I think they will be o.k. I will try to get some pictures up soon, maybe when I have them blocked out.
